Blog Tour ~ That's a Lie by Victoria Klahr ~ JMAC

Find out if Seth will be able to show Josie the true meaning of love in,
That's a Lie
the sequel to That's a Promise.
TITLE: That’s a Lie (Promises, Promises #2)
AUTHOR: Victoria Klahr
GENRE: Contemporary Adult, New Adult
RE-RELEASED: February 27, 2015

SYNOPSIS:
Seth is back.

When he walked back into my life, it almost felt like the pieces of my broken heart could be fixed. I thought we could go back to being best friends, but then I started to feel what I had been blocking out for years. I tried. Boy, did I try! But once I started to let him in, I wanted nothing more than to cross that line from friendship into something more…

Just when I think I can move on and let myself be happy, an ugly reminder from my past comes storming in and threatens to destroy the sliver of hope that's been growing since Seth came back.

Do I even deserve to be loved?

“I’m not asking to fix your heart. I’m not asking to mend you. I love each and every shattered piece of you. I’m asking that you let me love you. Let me love each piece of your broken heart, and I swear to you I will make up for every heartache you have ever experienced.”

I came back for Josie.

I knew I'd have to fight for her, but with the loss of her dad and the truth about what happened with her and Blake, I quickly realized that making her mine was going to be a lot harder than I first thought. The problem is, I can’t pretend like she’s just my best friend. I can’t pretend I don’t want more.

I'm willing to do anything to get her to admit she has the same passionate feelings for me, because I know once she opens up and stops lying to herself, I can show her what it really means to be loved. It's a battle of wills, but my love for her is stronger than her will to stop me.

So I fight for her. I fight because I know she deserves it.

WOW WOW WOW.... I'm still not over That's a Lie.  So, That's a Lie starts off right where That's a Promise leaves off.  Seth is back!!!!

Gosh, I'm so #teamseth it's not even funny.  The whole time reading this book all I wanted was a HEA for Seth and Josie.  My heart broke for the both of them in different ways.  With Seth my heart broke for him because all he wanted was to love Josie, and be loved in return.  When he realized that Josie had picked someone else over him, he was devastated.  I loved the fact that I got dual pov's in That's a Lie.  I got to see things from both Josie and Seth's pov and I loved that.

Josie, poor Josie.  Josie is way to hard on herself.  She has gone through it.  I just hurt for her.  Everything that she's gone through.  It kills me.  I just wanted to jump inside the book and hug her.  Tell her everything was going to be ok.  After Blake left, Josie's life basically ended.  Seth was gone, and her only chance at love, left her when things got hard, again.  Josie didn't know what to do.  But then Seth comes back!!!!

Ok so like I said before, I'm totally team Seth.  Seth and Josie have a love unlike any other love.  They've been best friends since they were 6.  They know everything about one another.  When they both finally decided to admit their feelings, and not hold back, gosh it's beautiful.

Victoria has a way with words.  I felt so much reading That's a Lie.  I felt the love Josie and Seth shared in the pit of my stomach.  It's the type of love that you want to experience yourself.  The type of love that only comes around once in a lifetime if you're lucky enough.  What these two characters have is inevitable.  Their souls belong to one another.  The thing is Blake wants Josie.  I still haven't figured out if Blake wants Josie because he really loves her, or just because he doesn't want anyone else to have her.  Either way, he's lurking and I don't like it!!

Both Seth and Josie have a long way to go, and there are a lot of things that could break them to ashes.  Will they survive everything coming their way? I hope so!!!

Victoria, I thought I loved you after reading That's a Promise! Well now I guess you can say I REALLY love you.  That's a Lie was just an amazing book.  I knew after reading the first page I was going to love it, and love it I did.  You are amazing, and I'm so happy you wrote this amazing story!

If you have not read That's a Promise, or That's a Lie, what are you waiting for?  It's an amazing 5 star read so go read it now!!!

Excerpt from That’s a Lie

I was instantly distracted as I walked into the space. Seth. Shirtless. I don't think I need to explain my lack of focus. Or the drool.

"You lied to me," he said gruffly, sitting on the barstool at my counter. His blond hair flopped in front of his eyes, and my hands itched to push it back. Touching him again the way I wanted to would satisfy only a millimeter of the need I have, but it would relieve some of the pain. I turned around to hide my thoughts.

"Ugh . . . I need coffee," I said vacantly, reaching for my coffee maker. I didn't even hear Seth move, but his hand grabbed mine and he turned me around, placing his hands beside me on the countertop to trap me. My breath caught, and I was positive he could hear my heart pounding in my chest.

His blue-green eyes screamed hurt and anger, but I didn't even care about him being mad. All that mattered was the charge that thumped between us. I was very aware of him. "You lied, Josie. You're not supposed to lie to me.""Seth . . . Come on," I said, turning my face away, unable to look at the raw emotion in his expression. His hand dashed out and grabbed my chin.

"How long, Josie?" he asked. I closed my eyes, not wanting to admit anything. "Open your damn eyes, Jos. Stop fucking hiding." His voice was hard, but it was also full of desperation. I opened my eyes and narrowed them at him. He didn’t understand that I needed to keep him away from me. My life is tainted by darkness, and he
doesn't need that. Yes, I lied to the one person who I said I wouldn't deceive again, but it was for his own good! "It doesn't matter, Seth. I'm fine.""Like fucking hell it doesn't matter. I haven't heard you scream like that since your nightmares after you were raped!"
The haunting reminder brought back vivid memories of that time. He or one of my dads would come lay with me to help me fall asleep. Every day that Seth wasn't in school, he was there with me, trying to make the nightmares go away. "Since the engagement party," I whispered, looking down. I don't know why I admitted it, but I think part of me realized I couldn't hold on to all this pain anymore. That's when my resolve started to break. How long could I go on fighting the feelings that I have for Seth? How long could I act like nothing hurts me? "Fuck, Jos . . . ," he whispered back, placing his forehead against mine. His signature smell of hay and apple pie drifted around me, and I almost lost my footing from wanting him so bad. "You should have told me.""I didn't want you to worry." "I worry about you every second you're not with me, Pussycat. Every second that you hide behind that
wall you've built, I wonder when you're going to crack." His hand reached up to caress my face, and I leaned into his touch. It was only an infinitesimal movement, but I still heard Seth's breath hitch. My lapse in self-control made him bold. He brought his mouth to the side of mine, and kissed me. I couldn't stop the
whimper before it escaped my mouth. "There you are," he whispered hoarsely against my lips, always seeing me, even when I didn’t want him to. I wanted to bask in the moment, but I had already opened up to him too much. I pushed through
his barricade and ran back to my room. "I've got to help Dad at the garage today," I threw out as an explanation, and then I went to hide in my shower.

*JMAC'S Review*

That's a Promise was such a great book!
Theirs not much I can say without ruining it for anyone who hasn't read it.  I feel like the tiniest little detail could give away a huge part of the story.

That's a Promise is the story pain and betrayal.
Josie is a girl who has been through a lot.  Because of traumatic experiences she doesn't like to be touched by anyone.  Josie didn't want to let her past control her, so she decides to finish off college away, with her best friend since forever, Seth.
Blake is delish.  He has the look of the bad southern boy, but he's as sweet as he is sexy.  It doesn't take long before they are both completely head over heels for each other.
Blake discovers that him and Josie have a lot more in common than they thought. But what he found out is something that could ruin them forever.
Victoria's writing held me captive from page one.  That's a promise was filled with heartache, love, lies, and betrayal.  Their are so many aspects to this story. Once you find out what you thought would be the OMG factor to the story, you get hit with an even bigger WTF moment.

That's a Promise leaves you wanting so much more! It was a well deserved 5 stars!
I cant wait to read the next book in the series, to see what happens next.

If you love a good story with a lot of twists, turns, and a bunch of sexiness; That's a Promise is the book for you.
Victoria, you created a forever fan in me!

Enjoy this excerpt from That's a Promise:

I’m in a sea of black. The beautiful May day gives no impression that there is any sadness or grief in the air. It’s one of those days that you want to spend outside, smelling the new blooming flowers, getting some sun, and walking in the grass barefoot, but none of those things hold any interest for me.

Everything is a blur around me, a haze that mirrors my own depression. I know people are talking to me, but I don’t hear them. They express sadness in their words, but most of them never sympathized with us before today. They talk as if they know us, but where were they before? They live their lives talking shit behind people’s backs, but don’t see the hypocrisy in their fake condolences.

I’ve learned to ignore the whispers and stares, a lesson received repeatedly as I grew up in what some would call an “unconventional” household. Apparently punching everyone who bullies you isn’t the socially acceptable way to handle things, so I try to just ignore them. I don’t want or need to let any of their negativity in, so I remain quiet. There’s been enough sadness in our lives, and there’s no need for nasty words from nosey neighbors to pile onto that pain.

A person in a black suit finishes shoveling dirt into the cold, deep grave. I focus on the earth closing around the person I loved so immensely and to whom I felt so close. The ground consumes the casket and takes my loved one away into a lonely pit; permanently putting an end to the best person I will ever know.

I look at my dad sitting next to me. He is distraught, but well medicated for the occasion, only showing emotion when he remembers he just lost the love of his life. He seems to have aged ten years in the past week. He was once the strongest and most commanding person I knew, but today, he looks like a child. He doesn’t speak, doesn’t do anything except for the essentials. He exists, but he’s not living. He looks up at me and I feel like maybe he wants to reach out and say something to comfort me, but I know his internal pain limits him from showing affection. I put my hand on his shoulder to show I’m here, hoping he understands what I mean.

People are finally leaving. Leaving us behind to grieve together in peace. That’s a lie. There is no peace for us, and there won’t be for a long time. With the preparations for the funeral complete, I have all the time in the world to sit and think about the gravity of what I just lost. That’s not peace. That’s torture.

“Dad,” I say, “I think that maybe we should head back to the house.” He sits there, giving no indication that he heard me suggest our departure.

“Dad,” I try again, after a minute. “Let’s say goodbye, and go home.” I can’t stand to be here any longer.

He stands slowly and walks over to the heap of dirt covering a life that was once vibrant and lively. He collapses onto the mound, and at first I’m startled by the sudden fall. Once I hear the heart wrenching sobs that escape his mouth, I understand he is saying his goodbye. I hear him murmuring about his undying love, and decide to give him some privacy.

I look toward the entrance of the cemetery, shaking myself out of the haze that I was in. I don’t even recall walking this far to get to the grave site, but I don’t want to remember, so I don’t try to conjure up the memory.

A figure leans against one of the nearby trees and I start to sweep my eyes past until recognition hits me in the chest heavily. I don’t think he wanted to be seen, but he was caught and he knows it. My throat starts to constrict and pain obstructs my chest.

He hasn’t changed much since the last time I saw him, except that he has no smile on his face today. He’s still breathtakingly handsome… but he’s also still the asshole I left behind at the café a year ago.

Why is he here? How dare he show his face here on a day like today?

I’m in such a state of shock that I lose concept of space and time. I stare at him for a good two minutes before I jerk back to reality.

He gives me a small wave and a slight lift of his beautiful lips. It is a sad and withdrawn smile, enough for me to know he understands exactly what happened.

I glare back at him, not in any mood to be civil, and start stomping my way toward him, intent on giving him a piece of my mind. He has no right to be here.

As I draw closer to him, he pulls himself from the tree and approaches. We meet up and stand so close I almost forget the reason why I came up to him. In my mind’s stuttering state, he speaks first.

“Hi Josie.” His deep, dominant voice washes over me, and I’m angry that it thrills me to hear his voice again. I swallow down the warmth, and try to keep my guard intact.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I hiss. “I’m pretty sure I made it clear I never wanted to see you again. How dare you show your face here?”

“Jo… I just wanted to come and say how sorry I am about your loss. I heard about Will, and I needed to come see how you were doing,” he responds, sadness clear from the roughness of his voice.

Hearing him use my nickname with his gentle tone makes me weak. I wrap my arms around my body to try and keep my anger from being impacted by his kindness.

“I don’t want you here,” I whisper, looking anywhere but at him. I don’t want him to see me break down ever again, but between my loss and seeing him, I don’t know if I will be able to hold back. In that one sentence, filled with the longing and sadness that I didn’t want to show, I made it clear to him that I’m still hurting over what happened.

“I understand. I needed to make sure you’re okay. I know how hard this is for you.” He slowly starts to reach out his hand, and while my cheek tingles at the thought of him touching even an inch of my skin, I think he knows that it’s unwelcome. As I turn the slightest fraction away, he lets his hand fall back to his side, a look of regret crossing his face.

“I can’t do this. Dad needs me right now. I have to take him back to the house,” I say, wanting to get rid of him and the memories he is bringing back.

“Let me stay with you for the day. We can catch up and I can help you with things. Today is tough as it is, let me help,” he says, confidence and determination starting to come back into his personality. This is the man I knew.

I hear footsteps behind me as my dad walks up to us. He stands there, lost in a world I don’t want to enter. He said his goodbye and now he’s retreated back into his shell. I look up at my unexpected visitor and get ready to tell him goodbye for the last time.

“Mr. Sommers, I am so sorry for your loss,” he says softly to my dad. “Josie and I were talking about heading back to the house to catch up and throw away some of the food your neighbors sent over.” He gives me a sly smile and then returns his attention to my dad. “Would one extra person be okay?”

My dad grunts and gives a barely noticeable nod, and we both know him well enough to know that he has accepted the offer. I shake my head at his response.

“Dad, go ahead to the car. I’ll be there in a couple minutes,” I say, hoping to convince Blake Porter to leave. When Dad is almost at the car, I whip myself around to scowl at the same stubborn Blake I used to know. He has a small cocky smirk playing on his lips, and I don’t like how distractingly handsome he still is.

“You need to leave and never come back around here or me again. I can barely even look at you without wanting to punch you in your stupid face!”

The last part is only partially true; a part of me wants to hit him again, and the other part wants to kiss him. His smile grows a little after he hears me say that, because he knows me well enough to figure out that I really do want to hit him.

“I get that you never wanted to see me again after the last time, Josie. Just let me be here for you today. Let me be your friend this one time. I can help. You know I can help,” he says sincerely. I know he can help, but that scares me.

I take a deep breath and try to sort out my thoughts. He is the last person I need to be talking to, and the second person I’ve wanted to talk to since this happened. I know exactly who is standing before me, and I know without a doubt that if I let him back in, I will be hurt and betrayed all over again.

Review

I’m not really sure I have the words to correctly and appropriately describe “That’s a Lie,” but here goes… Emotional, deep, strong, scary, kick ass, and a few more that are probably inappropriate. Taking a walk through the shoes of Josie, Seth, and Blake was like riding on an emotional rollercoaster. Josie is an emotional basket case that reminds me so much of myself it’s unreal. Starting off was rough, but once I got through the first few pages, I couldn‘t walk away from the first book in the series! Once I finished with book one, I went immediately into That‘s a Lie and I read until there was nothing left to read; I barely took any breaks at all, I just read straight through. I noticed from the beginning that this was going to be an emotional rollercoaster ride for me, so I was prepared, but I wasn’t prepared for how deep I would travel within this book.; you know you have a good one when you’re dreaming about the characters, and thinking about what they’re doing in a particular moment in time as if they really are alive and living in the same world you are.. (well maybe they are!)

The sex, oh my, the sex… There was a lot of sex in this series, and it became closer to borderline erotica toward the second book and on. It was a little bit strong for my taste, but I had no trouble reading through the pages like they were my lifeline. The books became confusing at some points, but That’s a Lie was more focused on one particular time in Josie’s life as opposed to ten different times in her life like book one.. In book one I’d forget which time frame I was in at that moment with the characters, but that was a small stone to get over. Overall, I give the books a four and a half rating, as they kept me glued to the pages throughout the series. Off to a slow start, with a middle and finish that you can’t walk away from.

Needless to say, I do believe that I would read a third book to this series without a doubt. I’m intrigued by the characters and I am definitely interested in seeing what happens with Blake, Josie, and Seth. I’ve become attached to those three!

Ok, let me get this off my chest, first... SETH IS MINE! Back off, witches! ;)

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's take a little look at what I think of "That's a Promise" by Victoria Klahr.

There is so much I loved about this book, it's hard to know where to start.   Victoria Klahr tackles some very serious subject matters and paints amazing pictures of where the characters grow and develop over a 6 year span of time.  The main character, Josie, is a girl who has gone through things no one should have to go through.  She has a best friend, Seth, who is her rock, and has been there for her no matter what, and also been a love interest of hers.   In comes Blake, who brings her feelings she never thought she'd feel for someone... they all have shocking secrets, that when they start unravelling bring complete changes to each relationship and the book takes these dynamic twists and turns throughout. There's flashbacks and changes to let you know why things are the way they are at this time and to help you develop a better bond with them throughout.    The characters are multi-dimensional, and keep you wanting more.   Sometimes the next thing to happen is predictable, but more often than not, it really isn't.   There were twists and turns that kept me so intrigued and made it where I did NOT want to put this book down, and when it was over, I wanted MORE and I want(ed) it NOW!!

I had so many emotions through this book -- I laughed, I cried, I was pissed off... and the ending -- OH.EM.GEE!!

This novel is seriously PHENOMENAL!  I can't stop raving about the depth of the overall story, and I have to say I am VERY impressed with it as a debut novel, especially.   It doesn't lack in substance, in the slightest, and approaches things that aren't already in every book out there. I am ready to kidnap Victoria and make her spit out the second book so I know what happens next, because I am NOT sure where it will go at all and I can't wait to find out!

Synopsis:
This book is book one in a three part series, so not all matters are resolved at the end of the novel. It is also meant for ages 18+ due to yummy adult content ;)

Happily ever after doesn’t exist. Not just in the romantic sense, but in the sense that there will never be a point in life that will contain no more obstacles.

Josie Sommers is a nerdy twenty four year old, elementary school teacher who has always considered herself a strong person. But with the loss of a loved one and the return of someone she vowed to never see again, her strength starts to break.

When he betrayed her in the ultimate way, she never thought she would let him back into her life, let alone open herself up to falling back in love with him.

Plagued with resentment and the burden of her own dishonesty,

Josie has to decide if forgiving and coming clean is worth the risk of losing him again. With so many hurdles, we know that Josie’s story is no fairytale.

That’s a promise.

Excerpt:
“You are gorgeous, as always, Josie.” He turned me around and brought his lips to mine. He kissed me slowly, and I could feel myself getting heated. He grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the bed. I was a little embarrassed when he started undressing us, unable to believe that I agreed to do something so risqué. He position me in a particular way, and went back to his cameras to make sure his shot was right and to set up timers on them.

“Okay, don’t think about the cameras,” he said, coming back to me. He started sucking on my neck as his hands roamed my thighs, stomach, and then my chest. I tried to ignore the cameras and focused on his tongue and mouth on me.

Click. He brought one of my breasts into his mouth and sucked on my hard nipple. His tongue always knew how to make my body feel good. Click. I moved my hands into his shaggy sandy blonde hair, and arched my back, needing more of him. Click. Seth aligned his chest with mine, and went back to assault my neck as I moved my hands to rub his shoulders and arms.  Click. His other hand that wasn’t fondling my breast, moved its way in between my legs, and rubbed me. I gasped at the feeling of increased pressure on my clit. Click. His fingers really were magical. It didn’t take me long before both the pressure of his mouth on my neck and breasts and the rubbing of his fingers against me, made me come. Click.

“So sexy,” he whispered, before putting on the condom he had ready on the bed.

His eyes were hooded with desire. He positioned himself in front of me and moved my long hair in a way that covered my breasts. Click. He eased inside of me gently, and then pulled back out fast. Click. He teased me like that for a while, as I whimpered with need. I decided to sit up and grab onto his back, nearly clawing him to finally give me what I needed. I started to raise my hips to his at a better rhythm, loving the small whimper that came out of his mouth. Click.
