He consumed my mind. I never even crossed his.
From the moment I met Michael, mysteriously brooding and dressed like a dark angel, there was something electric between us. Or so I thought.
What I believed was a seductive and undeniably raw attraction has ended up being something else entirely, something I never foresaw.
Because he’s a skilled liar and a master manipulator, and I downright misread his intentions.
And now I’m afraid that falling for the man in black might become my biggest regret.

Michael
An overwhelming remorse haunts me after losing my fiancée, but I’m not a man who can afford to lower my guard.
I’m a ruthless criminal, one of the top members of the merciless mafia, the Chicago Syndicate, and I moved back home to keep to myself and do a job.
But when a curvaceous pastry chef with a beautiful smile and a possible link to my former life catches me in a reckless moment, I’m forced to watch her and strategize a plan.
Because I’m not sure if she’s out to get me or if she’s just an innocent civilian who doesn’t know that the restaurant she works at is actually a front to launder Syndicate money.
And I intend to find out if she’s playing me while I’m playing her. But then the demons that haunt me force me to make a huge mistake…

Deceit has a price—I just have to make sure I don’t pay with her life.

A standalone novel from the Chicago Syndicate world.

Excerpt
“I’m going to wash up,” William said as a servant took hold of Charles’s hat and cane.
“Down the hall, to your left, William,” Rutherford told him, then he turned to Charles, and they walked off to the front parlor.
William passed a few guests and dipped his chin in greeting before rounding the corner to the washroom. He came to a sudden stop when he heard a soft moan coming from a room to his right. The door was slightly ajar, and he tilted his head to peek inside. A smile tugged at his lips as he witnessed a woman in a lover’s embrace. The man’s large hands roamed over her sapphire skirt, down to her luscious ass while she whimpered softly. In turn, her hands found their way into his pockets. The man was murmuring to her, and she let out a low laugh. She had stunning curls in a reddish-brown color that flowed down her back as she arched into the passionate hold.
William knew his rectitude of conduct was considered debased and immoral, but all these people lived the same way; they just all did it in secret. Typical upper class behavior.
When he felt a presence creeping up behind him, he swiveled around just in time to confront the person. He caught a wrist and pressed Anne with her back against the opposite wall, quickly covering her mouth with his hand to prevent her from making a sound. Her eyes widened, but he could feel she was smiling when he pushed his leg between hers. He raised one eyebrow and put a finger to his lips, warning her to be quiet.
His thoughts were consumed by the lady in another man’s arms, who was now whispering something. Her voice held a smoky edge that made William wonder about her face, about who she was.
Anne started to wiggle against him, and William realized he practically forgot the woman he had up against the wall. Removing his hand, he softly stated, “There are people in there; let’s give them some privacy.”
He desperately wanted to avoid speaking with Anne because she was either going to come on to him again or pick a fight about the way he treated her after they had sex earlier in the day. He also didn’t need her mother catching them since he had fucked Mrs. Rutherford a couple of years ago. So he hurriedly released Anne and strode to the front parlor while ignoring her plea to stay and talk for a minute. He wasn’t worried in the least that she would discuss any of her afternoon activities with her father or other family members since nineteen year old Anne was supposed to be a shy, rule-abiding society girl. But Anne was always looking for sexual pleasure, and she got it from different guys at the fight club. Today was the one time William finally let her into his bed, and he regretted it since she wasn’t very memorable.
Entering the parlor, he sought out Charles, who was already seated next to Rutherford.
The entire meal, William was ignoring Anne and looking for a woman in a sapphire dress and auburn curls to walk in, but she never came. Just when he decided that she was probably still with the man in that room, the man crossed the threshold, looking decidedly unpleased – without her trailing behind him. A crease formed in William’s forehead because he couldn’t imagine where that particular guest would be during the dinner. Nonetheless, he tried to focus on the conversation around him.
After dinner, the men retreated to another room to smoke, which was apparently a British tradition, but William wasn’t one to put up with traditions and neither were some other Americans, so they joined the women in the ballroom where a huge chandelier hung in the middle of the ceiling, illuminating the entire dance floor.
William snagged a glass of champagne from a passing footman's tray and downed it in one gulp in time to deposit it on another, replacing it with a second drink. A smirk flitted across his face when he spotted the woman in the far corner. It must be her with those curls flowing magnificently to her lower back, the tips ending right above her ass – an ass he could sink his teeth into. Why he needed to see her face, he didn’t know or particularly care. Moving toward her, he noticed how she kept quiet and just observed the men around her.
And when she turned her head, William stopped dead in his tracks. Standing under the light of the chandelier, he saw that her hair had a deep reddish glow, a color he had certainly not seen before. She was quite young, not yet a woman. Her skin seemed so soft to the touch. And her face was one he was most likely never to forget. Her eyes were a vibrant blue and magnificently huge, made even more remarkable because of her reddish-brown, thick curls. Her high cheekbones and deliciously plump, pink lips caught his attention next. The lady had an air of innocence and arrogance that had his cock twitching in his pants. She was perusing the room with a perceptive expression and passed William, then she stopped and slowly looked back at him.
He kept his stare locked on her face. There was something familiar in her features.
Her eyes widened a touch when he started to move toward her little group.
“Gentlemen.” He shook hands and smiled at her – she didn’t return the favor.
They all greeted him and relayed him with questions about the gaming club. William answered them while stealing glances at the girl, who was starting to look for an escape.
Did she know William saw her and her lover in the room?
What really bothered him was why no one had introduced her to him.
When a heated political discussion regarding liquor ignited, William took his opportunity to talk to her.
She was standing right across from him now. She was neither short nor tall, but somewhere roughly in the middle. And she had a small dusting of freckles on her nose.
“I believe we haven’t been introduced, Miss…”
She arced a perfectly plucked brow but kept silent, leaving William at a loss for words – for the first time ever. She definitely knew he’d caught her in a lover’s embrace.
As he leisurely examined her, he realized she was indeed young and made a considerable effort to look older with makeup and a revealing, low cut dress, the swell of her small breasts absolutely enthralling to him. He took a sip of his drink and kept gawking at her over the rim of his glass since he was enjoying how uncomfortable his attention was making her.
“Stop staring at me,” she hissed, low enough for only William to hear.
A corner of his mouth slowly rose. “Why so shy?”
She straightened her back and ran her fingers through her hair, that air of arrogance surrounding her still, and William thought that perhaps she was one of Anne’s juvenile friends.
“Where were you during dinner?” he wanted to know.
Her lips trembled, and she glanced around anxiously.
Rudely, she spun around to leave, but William stopped her by the elbow and released her instantly.
Then he slipped behind her, without touching, and leaned in close to her ear. “Off to another rendezvous?”
Her head turned, their lips almost touched, and she softly answered while gazing at his mouth, “No, we’re not all like you. At least I have the decency to find the privacy of a room.”
Finally, she admitted that she saw him too, probably when he had Anne pressed against the wall.
“Who are you?” he blurted, becoming slightly annoyed by her conceit.
She stepped away from him quickly and threw him a brash grin that he felt directly in his cock. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”
William was completely perplexed by this young girl, and all he could think to ask was, “How old are you?”
A tremor of shock went through her, yet she didn’t utter a word.
He added on a whisper, “I’ll find out anyway who you are.”
Without acknowledging his statement, she paced away briskly while the other men were oblivious to what had just transpired between the two of them.
And William smiled at her retreating form, promising himself to find out who this smug woman was.

EXCERPT
Adriano’s point of view
As I climb the stairs to the strip club of the Syndicate’s three-story headquarters, located alongside the North Shore of Chicago’s suburbs, I already recognize voices coming from the room at the end of the hall.
I’m greeted by Luca and James who are in the middle of the room beside the rounded burgundy sofa. I nod to both of them and fix my focus on the unknown woman with an attractive bob standing next to James. I’m usually not a fan of women with short hair, but who is this delectable creature?
James takes his cue to introduce us. “Adriano, meet Camilla. She’ll be working here at the club from now on.”
Why did he suddenly hire someone new? We’re not understaffed.
I can’t help but stare at her. My god, her legs go on forever; she’s just a bit shorter than I am, and I’m over six feet tall. I inspect her body slowly, like no one is watching, and when I reach her face, I’m pleasantly stunned that she’s challenging me with an arc of her perfectly shaped eyebrow. Her eyes are deep brown, heavily lashed, and slightly tilted up at the corners. Her cheeks are delicately boned. She looks absolutely appetizing in a tight, black knee-length dress. Sexy, yet not too revealing. In other words, she’s smokin’ hot!
“Camilla, nice to meet you.” I go old-school, take her hand in mine, and kiss her knuckles.
Luca hides an eye-roll, but I catch it and grin.
“Adriano,” she says huskily.
Her voice is hoarse. Hoarse in the sexiest way I’ve ever encountered. I didn’t expect that sensual voice to accompany this striking woman that smells like vanilla. With her, my obsession for vanilla ignited.
“Welcome to our little establishment.” Then I address James while holding on to her hand, “What will she be doing here?”
“Bartending,” James answers.
“Then I better show her the ropes.” I let the pad of my thumb swirl over her fingers, and she shivers noticeably; she’s not immune to my charms.
And I guide this interesting woman with me to the bar, which is a stainless steel and black granite area that’s open at each end and set up like a juice bar.
She speaks before we step behind it. “I can make drinks.”
Her simple statement has me confused.
“You look like you don’t believe I can tend the bar,” she elaborates.
Oh no, sweetheart, I’m not doubting your qualifications. I’m just staggered by the sex vibes you’re throwing around with that voice and those gorgeous lean legs.
I smirk while extending my hand, inviting her behind the bar. “No, I believe you.”
That was the first night I tried to get Cam into my bed. I failed that night and for over three months after and almost gave up my chase, but it was too much fun to try to capture her. I don’t even think she liked me at first.

EXCERPT

That evening, James and Salvatore – my Consigliere - meet Adriano and me at my penthouse where the doctor stitches us up and provides us with some pain medicine.
As we stand around my black granite-top kitchen island, I look at their weary faces.
James starts. “Any ideas who did this?”
Adriano answers as he twists his golden lighter between his fingers, “Leggia maybe? We should check with Biagio,”
“I’ll set up a meet with Biagio,” Salvatore offers while sliding onto the barstool.
James looks me in the eye. “I don’t like this. This is the first time our headquarters has been targeted. It could’ve been Leggia’s doing, but I have my doubts.”
“So do I,” I agree.
“I want you two to get some rest for a couple of days,” James orders and points to Adriano and me. “And we don’t meet in public for a couple of weeks. Capito?” Understand?
We nod and part. Everyone back to their own life.
James will be welcomed by his wife, Alessa. Salvatore’s Julia waits for him. Adriano will be happy with a whore. And I’m alone. Without her.

As much as I want to, I can’t refrain from reaching out, so I text and call her a few times during the weekend, but not one word from Fallon.
